AZranch, I agree that you should go with the hydro tranmission & 4x4, as well as the implements you mentioned. Probably want a toothbar on the FEL. I'd suggest the B2710/2910 as a starting place. Smaller might be nice sometimes in the garden, but bigger would be better on the other jobs, so I think that would be best all round.

Sheldon, he's right about the backhoe not working on the BX2200. I've had one of the BX22 brochures awhile, and just looked at one of the tractors at the dealer's place this morning.

Duckhollow, that sounds about right. I had to go to town this morning and stopped by to visit my Kubota dealer. He said he'd want $15,750 right now for a new B2710, like mine, with R1 tires, front end loader, AND canopy. He charged me $295 for the canopy when I bought it. I didn't think to ask about a price difference for R4 tires.

Steven, I don't think you provided enough information for anyone to give you a valid answer. Machinerylinks.com doesn't list a '98, but shows about $7k to $8k for a '99, depending on condition, but then you mention have some accessories, but don't say what they are.

Rich, I think the B2710 is a good choice. I've certainly enjoyed mine, although it and all the implements are for sale now. Too bad you live too far from me, and of course, in my part of the country we don't use snow removal equipment, so I can't help you there.

Jim, a wheel loader is a specialized "construction" tractor with a heavy duty front end loader, and with wheels instead of tracks; most commonly an articulated tractor, I believe. Try the link below for pictures and description of the ones Kubota makes.

Chim, I use a Bush Hog rear discharge mower and have no experience with the Caroni, but I think you'll be happy with it. I can get a little windrowing if I mow deep grass, but much less than I got with a side discharge riding mower. And if I mow the yard when it should be mowed, instead of letting it get too deep, there is no noticeable windrowing.

Stan, I've never even used a tractor with draft control, but have a farmer neighbor who has it on his big John Deere tractors. It "senses" when the load gets hard to pull (pulling plows through the ground) and raises the implement to lighten the load. If the load gets too easy to pull, then it lowers the implement deeper into the ground. From what I hear, it's great for serious tillage, although it seems to me that you'd be plowing some parts of a field more deeply than other parts, and that doesn't sound all that great to me. I've also heard that some "sense" the load through pressure on the top link and that some sense it through a loss of rpm. So now, someone who knows more tell me and Stan both more about it.

Peters, from what I've HEARD, propane in tires, even in the south, may be more common than most folks realize. Hard to believe anyone would do that, but they do. Scary, ain't it?

Anand, there's a lot of people on this forum who can help you with any specific questions, but in this case your question is pretty broad. I'd say you should consider the "B" series Kubotas, 4000 (or 4100) series John Deeres, and/or the TC series New Hollands (and now Case-International has a series that is the same thing as the TC series, but in red instead of blue, with a couple of minor differences in options). And, of course, there are other brands that may or may not be suitable for you. I'd highly recommend a hydrostatic transmission, power steering, 4 wheel drive, a front end loader, and a tiller. You'll almost certainly also want other implements, such as a brush hog, box blade, and probably others. <br>

You say the Howse used to be called HICO? Actually, the letters HICO are still in use and stand for Howse Implement Company. I'm using a Howse rotary cutter now, have owned Bush Hog in the past, but no personal experience with the Rhino, although they have a good reputation. The Bush Hog is definitely better quality (and more expensive) than the Howse, however, for my current use the Howse is quite satisfactory.

Alex, I don't think anyone can help you without knowing more about the land and what you intend to do with it. Is it flat, level, hilly, grassland, timber, brush, etc.? What do you intend to do with it? Raise cattle, other livestock, grow crops? What kind of crops? How much of the land will you use and how much, if any, will you leave natural? Will you be using the tractor year round? Air-conditioned cabs are sure nice, not only for heat, but if you're stirring up dust, grass and weed seed, etc. In other words, we'd just need a lot more information from you before any of us could give an valid answers.

Chris, I don't know about the helper springs; only time I used any was on a new '71 Chev. 3/4 ton (been awhile back). And would probably never do it again. Of course, there may be circumstances under which they can be worthwhile, but kinda like Tom said, you want to be careful and consider such things as the weight capacity of the axle, tires, wheels (an uncle of mine had a rim split once), and brakes. My recommendation would be to trade trucks for a heavier duty one, use a load distributing hitch and lift bars, or better distribute the load on the trailer.

Steve, in my opinion, the BX will be more stable on slopes than the B7500; lower center of gravity. And I've "heard" of folks who claimed they had a little problem with holding the foot pedal steady on rough terrain with the hydro. Personally, I've had a B7100 and now have a B2710 (both with "cruise control" - actually "speed set" that holds the pedal in one place), and occasionally, but very rarely use it. I usually don't have a problem holding a pretty steady speed, and if the terrain is so rough that I can't, then I need to slow down anyway. To me, it's a non-issue; maybe not to you, so you need to try them out on some rough ground.

Ron, each of the manufacturers (or at least most of them) make light, medium, and heavy duty models. And yes, some are better than others (models, not necessarily brands). You can compare the gauge of metal (thickness) of the deck, shape of the top surface (are you going to leave it out in the weather where a surface that holds water can cause it to rust or is it going to be kept inside where that doesn't matter), size and weight of the blades (thickness and width), blade tip speed (faster cuts and/or shatters brush better), and like you said, it can drive you nuts. But probably the most important thing is deciding what you have to cut with it (you say 1" saplings is the biggest thing?). Then my advice would be to buy cheap. King Kutter looks good to me and a lot of people have them. Personally, right now, I'm using a light duty Howse and it's quite satisfactory. I've also owned Bush Hog (sort of a personal favorite, but costs more than I needed to spend), have a cousin using a Bush Hog Squealer now, a neighbor who has a really old Howse that stays outside all the time (mine is indoors unless I'm using it). And if a dealer for one brand tells you another brand has problems, unless he has hard evidence to prove what he's talking about, I'd be going on down the road to another dealer. I think any of the brands you mentioned, as well as several others, would be quite satisfactory for your use.

James, I can't say what the difference would be now, since I haven't priced the tractors at the different dealers lately. In '95, I visited all three of those places, in addition to Vitter's in Corsicana, while I was shopping for a tractor. When I decided what I wanted (a B7100 with a B1630C front end loader), I simply called each of them, told them exactly what I wanted, and asked what was the best deal they could make me (I didn't tell any of them that I was checking elsewhere and didn't tell any of them what the others had offered to sell it for). Vitter was highest (and there are other reasons I'd avoid them), Zimmerer was next, Central Tractor (Wapiti Equipment was the name then), and Tipton International was the best price. I bought from Tipton, and then when I traded up to the B2710, I didn't shop around; just traded with Tipton (and think I got as good a deal as I could have gotten anywhere).

But I agree that it would be worth a little more (if it isn't too much) to buy from a nearby dealer for service.

Jim, my tiller, and the only tiller I've used on a tractor, is a forward rotation model; does as great job. However, I've used both forward and reverse rotation walk behind tillers. Some say the reverse rotation (or counter rotating) tillers do a better job in fewer passes. Maybe so, but I think the difference is minimal myself. I prefer the forward rotating tiller for a variety of reasons: (1) they're usually considerably cheaper to buy, for reasons that are a mystery to me, (2) the counter rotating tiller tended to leave a mound of dirt at the finishing end of the row, (3) if I hit a rock, brick, root, etc. with the forward rotating tiller, the tines are coming down on top of it and the tiller tends to just jump up and over - I've never damaged a tine yet. But with a counter rotating tiller the tines are coming at the obstacle from behind and below and I THINK there's a greater chance of breaking something (haven't done it so I won't say for sure). Personally, I think either type does a good job.

Harold, a more appropriate question might be, is there anyone who has NOT done that.LOL Usually after once or twice, you notice a difference in sound when you start off. If you've only done it once, I doubt that you have anything to worry about.
